Korean Gala Triumph

Korean Gala Triumph

West Australian Ballet today returned from a highly successful tour to Korea, performing in Seoul and Chang Won to packed houses. Headlining this special gala was Stuttgart Ballet’s Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Suejin Kang, who performed with Stuttgart Ballet principal dancers, Marco Rademaker and Jason Reilly, and former Principal Dancer Ivan Cavallari (now West Australian Ballet Artistic Director).

West Australian Ballet dancers, Jennifer Provins, Sacha Wakelin, Christian Luck, Darryl Brandwood, Milos Mutavdzic, Ben Marrett and Yann Lane also performed on this mixed bill which drew an electric response from audiences.

Korean-born Kang has achieved ‘Madonna’ status in Korea. Audiences responded with a 20 minute curtain call on opening night, and throughout the season hoards of well-wishers and autograph hunters created an ominous stage door crush.

West Australian Ballet performed works by Uwe Scholz, Stephan Thoss and Ivan Cavallari, whilst Kang and the Stuttgart dancers presented works including Jiri Kylian, and concluded with highlights from John Neumeier’s The Lady of Camellias.

Says Cavallari: “This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for my dancers to perform along side one of the world’s greatest dramatic ballerinas. They executed their performances with great style and sophistication. I was very proud to see them perform in such an important context.” Asked why he came out of retirement for this season: “How can you say no to a dancer like Suejin Kang. We had performed together over many years, so it was like old times – although my muscles thought otherwise!” he said.
