Pinocchio - WORLD PREMIERE! - a stunning new carving at His Majesty's Theatre  in September.

Since it was first published in 1883, Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio has captivated and influenced generations of young people with its moral tale about a little wooden puppet who is naughty, mischievous and daring, and faces many challenges along the road towards becoming human.

Pinocchio is fashioned in the workshop of the craftsman Gepetto. He sets out on a journey and has many great adventures: he is suckered by a scheming fox and cat, led to a seductive toy land where boys are turned into donkeys, befriended by the blue fairy and swallowed by an enormous shark. Whenever he tells a lie, his nose grows. In the end it takes an act of great courage and selflessness for Pinocchio finally to become a real boy.

There is a strong tradition of artists giving Collodi's heartwarming story new life, most famously by Walt Disney in 1940. Now in a bold interpretation for West Australian Ballet, choreographer and artistic director Ivan Cavallari takes his inspiration from the original Collodi narrative.

Cavallari has assembled an outstanding international team to bring his ballet to life: lead designer Edoardo Sanchi (resident at La Scala Milan and the Arena di Verona and co-creator of Cavallari's acclaimed 2008 production of The Nutcracker) with costumes by acclaimed Milanese designer Maria Porro. A magnificent original score has been created by feature film composer Enrico Melozzi and will be performed by West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

Cavallari's Pinocchio is being created on a truly international scale: a specially designed truss constructed in Amsterdam, animation in San Francisco, set cloths painted in Milan, 132,000 beads manufactured in China, and additional painting and construction in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

Don't miss West Australian Ballet's Pinocchio, a family favourite which, with its universal themes and colourful characters, is certain to captivate a new generation of youngsters - and the not so young!

About Enrico Melozzi

After graduating with top grades in cello, Melozzi turned to composition, first in Germany where he became assistant to the well-known composer and virtuoso clarinettist Michael Riessler, and then in Rome, where he now lives, studying composition under Luis Bacalov at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and working on soundtracks both for film and television. Melozzi has received a number of commissions both from television networks and theatres and he has also collaborated on a number of projects with leading exponents of new Italian jazz both as instrumentalist and arranger and composer.

About Maria Porro

Maria Porro was born in Como in 1983. She graduated with honours in Set Design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera and now works in Milan as set designer and costume designer.

A finalist at the Premio Nazionale delle Arti (national arts award) in 2008 with the "Sotterraneo" project, she worked on the subjects of "theatre outside the theatre" and of how to make the most of city spaces. Porro's "Material house" project, in 2007, in association with the Lissoni studio, applied the material techniques of scenography to designing. She has always been interested in stylistic contamination and is experimenting with the use of video in set design for the theatre. In 2008, as part of this project she participated in the production of the ballet "The Nutcracker" at His Majesty's Theatre in Perth, under the guidance of the set designer Edoardo Sanchi. She is working as set designer and costume designer with the "Container Teatro" company.
