Interview with Joseph Simons on Genesis
"(Joseph's) delivery was flawless, and proved to be a crowd favourite." Tim Balfour, The West Australian.
2009 Young Artist Joseph Simons is a man of many talents. not only is he a vivacious and athletic dancer with a commanding stage presence, but is also one of West Australian Ballet's exciting young choreographers featured in the upcoming Genesis season.
Born in Dubbo, Australia, Joseph trained at the Dubbo Ballet Studio for 11 years, and with the interstate program at The Australian Ballet School. since joining West Australian Ballet this year as part of the Young Artist Program Joseph has impressed Perth audiences on stage, featuring in Cass Mortimer-Eipper's It Is and playing a crowd-favourite street beggar in Romeo and Juliet.
Joseph is currently working on his piece for Genesis entitled A Few Moments of Your Time, a reflection on the irksome, phony and condescending people we sometimes meet in our society. A Few Moments of Your Time is part three in a series which Joseph has been developing over the past two years. It was inspired when he read a letter to the editor, by a man ranting about a young shop assistant he had come across who was unnaturally cheery - so much so, that he was offended by her lack of genuinity.
"I wanted to create something that would simulate the experience of talking to such a person," Joseph said.
For someone as young as joseph, he sees the chance to have his work displayed on such a high-profile stage as a fantastic opportunity.
"It is enormously exciting for me to be choreographing with such high quality dancers," Joseph says.
"For me it is also about challenging dancers with something they are not so familiar with. I'm extremely interested in dance theatre, so working with the dancers to get them to talk and sing on stage has been great and we've had a lot of fun in the studio.
The other benefit of working with dancers who are (sometimes) almost ten years older than me is that they are not only performing my work, but also mentoring me through the choreographic process because their experience is so much broader than my own."
